Air Conditioning and
Accessories
Air Conditioning (All-Weather)
While the individual units that make up the system are changed in size and location, most service procedures are unchanged from those recommended at the end of 1958 production.
Freon capacity is changed to 4 1/2 lbs. The compressor is 9.28 cu. in. ball bearing type, similar to that used in 1957. Only Frigidaire 525 viscosity oil is recommended for use with this type of compressor. The oil capacity is 13 ounces.
The use of the 1958 type clutch on this compressor makes it necessary to either purchase a new J-6322 Clutch Plate Remover or rework the old J-6322 by drilling the large threaded hole 3/16" deeper, using a 5/8" dia. drill. When the J-6323 Clutch Plate Installer is used, it will be necessary to use an additional washer, 1/8" thick, in combination with the washer supplied with the tool.
Air Conditioning (Cool Pack)
The Cool Pack air conditioning is a completely new unit.,
The hot-gas by-pass valve is not used on the 1959 Cool Pack Unit. The compressor clutch, controlled by a thermostatic switch, is used to cycle the system.
Like the All Weather system, the Cool Pack uses a ball-bearing compressor, with an oil capacity of 13 ounces of 525 viscosity oil. Freon capacity is changed to 4 lbs.
Airflow Heaters
The airflow heater is completely new in design along with changes in the method of installation. The heater uses 100% outside air only, and incorporates an air seal on the air inlet door.
The water control valve is part of the heater core. The new location of the water valve plus valve modifications offers much better heater temperature control. Revised service procedures are required to replace the valve.
Core size has been increased from 52 square inches to approximately 70 square inches. Hose routing is improved with the elimination of one hose. The resistors have been removed from the heater switch and installed in the air duct similar to 1957.
The heater motor is mounted on the extreme right of the cowl. It is necessary to remove the complete right hood hinge to remove the heater motor. |
Recirculating Heater
The recirculating heater is basically the same as 1958 but has increased output based on a core revision.
Speed Signal
A new optional speed signal indicates by illuminating a red light when the desired speed is being exceeded. This mechanism can be adjusted by turning an instrument panel mounted dial for any speed from 20 to 80 miles an hour.
This device is driven by a unit on the back of the speedometer, in series with the speedometer cable. The mechanism is similar to a speedometer, operated by magnetic cups, and is serviced similar to speedometers.
Throttle Holder
A new accessory offered for the 1959 Chevrolet is a throttle holder (Fig. 16).

This is a mechanical device that locks the throttle in the desired position to maintain a fixed engine speed. Application of the brakes temporarily de-activates the holding device. |
